Seems Windows cant auto install the driver, you need to get the correct driver from the manufactured site

I suggest update your chipset as well, find it at your PC or Mainboard manufactured site

Thank you both, but I did uninstall it all and then installed the latest driver. It didn't help
I've already installed the latest chipset.

Hi LWC,
We wonder if there is any luck your issue has been resolved, if you found any suggestion is useful we would appreciate it if you could mark it as an answer instead of us.
If you've found solution by yourself, you also could share with us and we will mark it as answer so everyone could refer to it.
As britishdhez mentioned that you device might be a USB 3.0 device and it might did the trick.
Regards
D. Wu

No, using the other USB 3.0 port didn't help.

Sorry, what device are you using? PC or tablet? and can you tell me the details model or spec?
Check this FAQ from manufactured
http://www.asix.com.tw/faq.php?op=faqdetail&PItemID=131&FaqNoID=#641
Q0003: Why don't ASIX's AX88179 standard drivers work with my AX88179 device?
A0003: All ASIX's AX88179 standard drivers are qualified with ASIX's AX88179 demo board with AX88179 default Vendor ID (0B95h) and Product ID (1790h). Some of AX88179 manufacturers have their own Vendor ID and Product ID on their AX88179 applications.
In this case, ASIX's AX88179 standard drivers will not work with your AX88179 device. Please contact the technical support of your AX88179 device manufacturer to obtain a proper driver
Q0007: Does AX88179 support Windows Surface RT 8.0/8.1 driver?
A0007: No, AX88179 doesnt support Windows Surface RT 8.0/8.1 driver
I just suspected 2 things, incorrect driver or compatibility driver

Hi LWC,
Thanks for your feedback, since we have no such a hardware to test the driver compatibility on Windows, we suggest you find another windows device to check this issue again.
For specific hardware issues, as what suggested by britishdhezwe suggest you contact with manufacturer first because they are more experienced than us on this and there might be more similar case. So far, we only can provide some general trouble shooting steps based on your error message.
It might occurs when system cannot find the specific INF file, in some case, the standard "Have Disk" => Browse to directory which contains the driver. It would respond with the correct device being identified using the INF file in that directory.
Backup and then delete the REG_BINARY value 'CONFIG' under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network
Regards
ASIX didn't even bother replying to me.
Deleting that registry item didn't seem to do anything. When I choose "Have Disk" it just keeps saying file not found (as shown in the aforementioned screenshot).
Where can I get you the device's Vendor ID & Product ID?
I use a PC (laptop) - Lenovo Yoga 11S:
As mentioned, it's Windows 8.1 64-bit, not Windows 7.
This is how to find vendor ID and device ID, after that we check if that specific vendor ID and Device ID got different driver
First find the vendor ID and device ID of the network adapter on your target computer.
The vendor and device IDs are shown as VEN_VendorID and DEV_DeviceID. For example, if you see PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_104B, the vendor ID is 8086, and the device ID is 104B
To set the correct expectation, we should discuss at hardware forum and hardware manufactured should have better answer to resolved this issue. This is non-OS issue. But lets do our best :)

It's called a little differently here:
USB\VID_0B95&PID_1790&REV_0100
USB\VID_0B95&PID_1790
The quoted FAQ had "Vendor ID (0B95h) and Product ID (1790h)" so mine is the same except the suffix "h".
Ok, we already make sure Asix is the right vendor
just want to make sure, which version you download from Asix website?
I suggest these
also try to disable Hyper-V (if any) in BIOS, temporary disable your Realtek Wifi to test, also try clean boot
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
if still persist try to contact manufactured and let us know the update
http://www.asix.com.tw/contacts.php
I've downloaded both this version and the direct INF ("1.16.12.0_WHCK").
I already wrote I've disabled my WiFi driver.
I already wrote I've contacted them and they didn't even bother to reply.
if all troubleshoot above didn't help, the ultimate thing is try this USB LAN to other machine which have Windows 8.1 to test (Your friend PC or collages) , if issue still persist i suggest you try also to contact Lenovo forum
I found inside that thread there is one person approached himself as engineer from Asix (maybe)

Hope this information will help, you are not alone, I checked there is a lot of issue regarding this Asix ax88179 with Windows 8.1 which not solved yet
Anyway, again let us know if there is any update
yes, its more to hardware compatibility or driver issue. They must have better solution for this case
please let us know the update, I really want to know how they (Asix or Lenovo) fix this issue :)

When I install its specifically designed Win 8.1 64-bit driver, I get this:
<transcription>
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)</transcription>
Seems like there may be quite a lot of scope from that for tracing to try to expand that symptom. E.g. using ProcMon if nothing better. And I do believe that there are other things better but I'm just not familiar with them or haven't used them. E.g. since it is a wireless thing would netsh wlan not have some way of giving you more information? Also, as soon as you start adding diagnostics then other more general traces such a ProcMon can start showing you more.

Well, all of a sudden my WIFI driver started showing a yellow exclamation point too.
It happened when I tried disabling+enabling it.
My Bluetooth soon followed, when I tried reinstalling drivers.
After a fruitless effort to dig in forums, I just restored my laptop's initial Windows 8, installed all the updates and then upgraded to 8.1.
...and now my my network cards - including the external ASIX - work!
